Abstract
This thesis analyzes the urban environment of the eleventh century and Turkic-Sogdian language contacts based on information about Balasaghun, Taraz, Isfijab, and Kashgar in Mahmud al-Kashgari’s work Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk. Bilingualism among urban residents, the regional meanings of the terms ulush and ordu, as well as place names and the concept of political residences, are compared using a historical and source-studies approach. Al-Kashgari’s direct observations are distinguished from his evaluations of languages, and the methodological limitations of equating multilingualism with ethnic replacement are demonstrated. The thesis concludes that the lexical and toponymic records in the work provide important evidence for studying intercultural communication between cities, while additional sources are needed to determine the ethnic composition of the population and the extent of language shift.
