Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive study of the geoecological and ameliorative impacts of large hydraulic structures built under arid subtropical conditions on adjacent agricultural landscapes, using the Central Fergana Reservoir (CFR) as a case study. The main objective of the study is to assess landscape changes, the spatial dynamics of vegetation cover, and secondary soil salinization processes across 29,330 hectares within the reservoir’s impact zone between 2010 and 2025 using remote sensing and GIS technologies. The study calculates the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) based on Landsat satellite imagery (Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS, and Landsat 9 OLI-2) and analyzes long-term changes. The results show that the water surface area expanded from 1% (293.3 ha) in 2010 to 15% (4,399.5 ha) by 2025. Furthermore, analyses of 27 soil profiles and laboratory measurements of electrical conductivity (\(EC_e\)) and moisture content confirmed the formation of localized waterlogged areas and highly saline solonchaks in the 500-meter coastal buffer zone as a result of a rise in the groundwater table to 1.0–1.5 m. Environmental stress factors identified through comparative analyses with a control (background) site were scientifically substantiated, and practical recommendations for sustainable regional management were developed.
