Abstract

This article investigates the semantic-pragmatic network and cognitive framing of touch, a prototypical contact verb in contemporary English, and its major synonyms (contact, tap, pat, feel, stroke, press, and grasp). Drawing on the principles of corpus linguistics, cognitive semantics, and systematic lexicology in Uzbek linguistics, the study analyzes the subtle semantic features, argument structures, case-governing patterns, and metaphorical extensions of these lexical units. The findings demonstrate that the verb touch functions semantically as a neutral and highly frequent hyperonym, whereas its synonyms specify such parameters as the intensity of the action, its duration, the intention of the subject, and the emotional impact of the contact. Furthermore, the article examines cognitive models of the transfer of physical contact into psychological, communicative, and social domains through a comparative analysis of English and Uzbek.
