Abstract
Ischemic injury is one of the most significant pathological processes underlying the development of infarction in various organs. The aim of this study is to summarize current understanding of the cellular mechanisms of ischemic injury and to esta blish their relationship with the major morphological manifestations of infarction. The sequential alterations in cellular energy metabolism, ionic homeostasis, and mitochondrial function that determine the transition from reversible cellular injury to irreversible damage and necrosis are discussed. Particular attention is given to ischemia–reperfusion injury, the morphological patterns of necrosis, and the specific features of infarction in different organs.
