Abstract

The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed teaching and learning practices in higher education. Among AI-powered technologies, ChatGPT has attracted considerable attention due to its ability to generate human-like responses, provide immediate feedback, and support language learning. In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, academic writing remains one of the most challenging skills for university students because of difficulties related to grammar, vocabulary, coherence, and critical thinking. ChatGPT can  provide learners an opportunity to improve their writing by the help of personalized assistance, language correction, brainstorming, as well as text organization. This article investigates the role of ChatGPT in improving EFL students' academic writing skills by reviewing recent studies on AI-assisted language learning. The paper discusses the major educational benefits of ChatGPT, including increased learner autonomy, improved writing accuracy, greater motivation, and individualized learning experiences. At the same time, it shows essential concerns such as academic integrity, overreliance on AI, privacy issues, and the potential decline of critical thinking skills. Besides that the article argues that ChatGPT should be integrated into English language teaching as a supplementary instructional tool rather than a replacement for teachers. Effective implementation requires appropriate teacher guidance, digital literacy, and ethical use of AI technologies. The findings highlight that responsible combination of ChatGPT can contribute to more effective writing instruction and better learning outcomes in EFL contexts.
