Abstract

This thesis examines the role of allophones in modern language use, focusing on their phonological, sociolinguistic, and communicative significance. Although allophones do not change lexical meaning, they play a crucial role in intelligibility, accent variation, identity construction, and second language acquisition. The study analyzes how contextual phonetic variation contributes to natural speech production and perception in contemporary multilingual societies. Particular attention is given to English as a global language, where allophonic variation reflects regional accents and social diversity. The research demonstrates that allophones are not merely phonetic details but functional elements that influence communication efficiency, language teaching, and speech technology.
