Abstract
Plato believed that the cause of hysteria in women at certain times was the “sorrowful womb”. According to him, the uterus grieves and mourns because it is not carrying a child. Other contemporaries argued that the uterus, when moving around the body and getting stuck between other internal organs, cries and a woman becomes hysterical.
The article examines the term “menstruation” used in gynecology and describes its features as a physiological, psychological and lexical unit.
