Abstract

This scientific article is devoted to a fundamental analysis of the role of hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) in the sustainable development of the global energy system. The study substantiates that HPPs are not only an environmentally friendly source of energy, but also their crucial regulatory function in ensuring the reliability and stability of the system. Using theoretical and comparative statistical methods, the high efficiency of HPPs is shown, especially in covering peak loads and integrating other renewable sources. In conclusion, the need to modernize existing HPPs and expand the construction of pumped-storage HPPs (PSPPs) is proposed in order to increase energy security and combat climate change.
