Abstract
This article examines fanfiction - the literary creation of fan readers based on the works of others - as a phenomenon of contemporary participatory culture. Using Russian (D. Yemets, D. Glukhovsky) and international (E.L. James) practice, the mechanisms of fan text's transition from the amateur to the institutional arena are examined. A conclusion is drawn that fanfiction is a natural consequence of the democratization of the literary process in the digital age.
