Issues of Moral Advice and Instruction in “Zarbulmasal”

Abstract

This article examines the place and socio-political significance of the work Zarbulmasal in Uzbek literature. The skillful use of folk proverbs not only enriches the composition of the work but also complements the distinctive features of the plot and the speech characteristics of its characters. The fact that the work is built upon didactic fables, allegorical narratives, expressive and accessible language, and folkloric elements demonstrates the masterpiece status of Zarbulmasal. It would not be entirely correct to interpret the development of events in Zarbulmasal solely as being based on social issues. Through the depiction of animals and birds, the allegorical work reflects the views of Gulkhaniy, a prominent literary figure of the nineteenth century, as well as the lifestyle of different social groups and various human traits, often conveyed through sharp expressions and moral advice. Through satire, the author emphasizes moral values as the solid foundation of individuals, society, and even the state system as a whole.
